THE CITY THROUGH TIME
Rome is a city built over other cities. Bronze Age hill settlements preceded the republic and empire; later churches and palaces reused ancient sites and materials. Papal rule shaped another layer, before Rome became Italy's capital in 1871. The result is a street plan where ruins, working neighbourhoods and national institutions meet. A historic view captures one layer of that story, never the whole of ancient Rome.
